Essential Guide to Choosing the Right Room Draperies/Curtains

Posted by John Dawkins on 13th Mar 2019

Curtains and draperies are among the most important styling elements in every home décor. The choice of curtains or draperies you use can impact the aesthetic value of any room. Therefore, it goes without saying that you need careful planning in choosing which curtain or window treatments to use for maximum impact. It can help to draw the entire look together while also giving the value of privacy.

Bedroom

Let’s start with the most important room to consider when thinking about investing or styling with window treatments – the bedroom. For most people, they consider the bedroom as the most important room in the house. It is also the most personal room. It is therefore important that you create a relaxing haven with the right choice of curtains.

Privacy and light filtering are two basic options you need to consider when choosing the right curtain. The best technique you can use is to use a double rod in this room. You can opt for the lighter layer of curtain (say, linen or sheer) for the layer underneath. Meanwhile, the darker and thicker layer is on top. You can draw the darker layer of curtain for when you want to go to sleep to block out any light (and to ensure privacy). Or, you can draw them out to allow the light to come in. Either way, you will have more versatility using this method.

The color or pattern of the curtain you use can also have an impact on the style of your bedroom. Depending on the color scheme of your bedroom furniture, you can choose the color scheme for your curtains to match accordingly.

Kitchen

The kitchen is a functional room in the house. Getting enough natural light into this space is therefore a must. Opt for a light-colored window treatment or curtain in your kitchen, or choose a curtain made of sheer fabric. That way, you can create an airy atmosphere in the kitchen so you can easily work in this area. Aesthetic can also be considered but it should be secondary to the functional use of curtains in this room.

Living Room

The living room is probably the most versatile and forgiving rooms in the house to choose curtains for. This is because you can create different types of moods depending on your choice of curtain to decorate with. You can choose a curtain based on your need for privacy or lighting, but it can be chosen primarily for the aesthetic value. Feel free to experiment the look that you want to create or be inspired by your interior décor theme.

Dining Room

The addition of curtains and draperies in the dining area can significantly impact the vibe of the room. If you are choosing a curtain for a breakfast nook, you can keep the area open and well-lit. For that, you can opt for curtain fabrics with sheer layers or light colors. But for the formal dining area, the thicker and dark colored fabrics might be a better choice. You can choose fabrics like velvet to set the mood for this space.
